Traditions

Over the weekend I found myself consumed with college football. Going from game to game throughout the day, I noticed something we lack at Wichita State basketball games: Tradition (in the student section). A few observations I made from saturday; Notre Dame students lift each fellow students and do push-ups equaling the their score. After kick off you hear the booming echos of N..D! The traditional gator chomp in Florida (one of my personal favorites) can be seen on a reagular basis.

I am not saying we need to be lifting up our fellow students and do push-ups, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see the students continue to organize the 1,000 seat section creating new cheers. Basketball at Wichita State continues to grow around the city and state. For the first time in a number of year the 10,000+ season tickets are sold out! Shocker message boards are in full swing with banter all over the place out the up coming season. Please try not to see me as a student bashing hate monger. When I look over at the sea of yellow and white at home basketball games, I smile and remember when it was not so during Turgeon's early years. Heck, you could not give away student seats when WSU played the entire home season at the "barn" aka Kansas Coliseum.
Perhaps, viewing the traditions of schools with footbal programs, with traditons of beloved school is not fair, but neither is life.
Wichita State basketball continues to move in the right direction, so with that I would hope the students and fans move in the same direction. Last season the shocker student fans cheered and screamed to the high heavens, and it was wonderful. I hope the SGA helps to organize the incoming freshman and any other students who want to join, in a "Traditions" night. The cheerleaders teaching the student body our alma mater, organized student cheers, etc...
Maybe this will remain wishfull thinking, but I believe our student section can be one of the nations best.
