Where have you gone?
Shirts around the campus may say "Undefeated since 1986", and we all may laugh, but as fall saturday's pass us by, the empty seats at Cessan Stadium cry out for a bygone eara of Wichita State Football. As father time moves along we hold on to a past that we believe can live again, only if in our hearts. Across the country alumni flock to their beloved universities and enjoy a day full of story telling, and tailgating and football. Sadly, the days of Wichita State Football are gone.
Wichita State football is carried on today in the NFL by Bill Parcles. Yes, that Bill Parcells. The super bowl winning coach of the New York Giants, and current head coach of Dallas.
The university needs to imbrace the football program. WSU never reached the national championship game, or even a high profile bowl game, they reached our hearts.
On September 11th, 1982 WSU defeated KU 13-10. The low point.... well, we know this one all to well. The plane crash of the Wichita State football team is still recognized to this day with a reath layaing ceremony on campus and permenant memorial to those who passed away on a most tragic of days.
The administration should celebrate and be proud of the team and players who dawned the black and yellow of our school. Players such as; Jumpy Geathers (pictured in his Washingtion Redskins uniform) went on to play for 13 years in the NFL winning Super Bowl XXVI with the Redskins. Perhaps the most beloved player of all Prince McJunkins....a hero to all who rember. A player for WSU from 1979-1982, he went on to a nice career in the CFL. The Shockers also hiered the first black coach in division 1-a football. Here is a nice story aobut WSU football as well.
We all hope you come back soon Shocker football.
